Fjellro is a planned five-star resort on a quiet lake beside the historic locks of the Telemark Canal, with skiing from the door in winter. The project is in development; the opening date is to be announced.

The idea
Fjellro is designed as a casino hotel in Norway that takes its pace from the water rather than the clock. The site lies on a long, calm lake in Telemark, beside a flight of stone locks on the Telemark Canal, with pine forest behind it and a flat-topped mountain on the horizon. The plan is a low group of dark timber buildings, a lakeside restaurant, a spa built around sauna and cold water, and a gaming lounge that stays in the background.
A canal lock is a patient machine. A boat enters, the gates close, water fills the chamber and the boat rises, step by step, until it can move on. Nothing about it is hurried, and nothing about it is hidden. That is the idea the resort is being shaped around: a slow arrival, clear rules, and rooms that look out at something real instead of at each other.
The same landscape gives the winter its character. Telemark is where a particular way of turning on skis took its name, and the plan is for prepared tracks to start at the door whenever the snow allows. Summer belongs to the canal and the lake; winter to skis, sauna and warm windows. Everything described on this site is planned and may change as the design develops.
One view, two seasons
Like any lake hotel in Norway, this one will live by the seasons. The resort is designed around a single view: the lock chamber, the red lockkeeper's hut and the lake beyond. Here is the same place as it is expected to look in July and in January.
In the warm months, wooden boats pass through the locks on the canal's own timetable, the lake is open for swimming from the jetty, and the evenings stay light until late. Paddling, walks along the towpath and the floating sauna are planned for this season.
When snow comes, the plan is for prepared tracks from the door, a lakeside sauna with a hole cut in the ice, and lanterns along the paths. The canal rests, the lock gates stay shut and the lake freezes along the shore.

The oldest machine on site
The Telemark Canal was cut through forest and rock well over a century ago to carry timber and travellers inland, and its stone chambers and timber gates are now part of the region's engineering heritage. Fjellro is planned as a canal hotel beside the locks, not on them. From the rooms and the terrace you will be able to watch the old routine: a boat noses into the chamber, the gates are pushed shut by hand, water pours in through the sluices, and the boat climbs a staircase of water towards the lake. It takes a few quiet minutes, and it is the best introduction to this place that we know.

Stay
Six ways to stay at a planned five-star hotel in Norway, from a canal-side room for two to a house of its own higher up the slope. Every figure below is a design target, not a final plan.
Planned on the canal side, with a window that looks straight onto the locks. A pale stone bathroom, a reading chair by the glass and the sound of water through the day.
Set back among the pines, with a window seat, a dark slate shower and a private timber terrace between the trunks. A quieter room, planned with longer stays in mind.
An attic loft under steep rafters, designed with a drying rack for skis and boots, a wood stove and a bath beneath the roof window. Sized for four friends who plan to be out on the tracks early.
Planned inside the converted lockkeeper's hut, with a sitting room and fireplace, a bedroom facing the gates and a separate bathroom. The oldest address on the site, kept small on purpose.
Built out over the lake in a timber boathouse, with a living room at water level, a private jetty and a sauna of its own. A boutique luxury stay for guests who want the lake right at the door.
A separate house higher up the slope, facing the flat-topped mountain. A great room, a dining table for six and a terrace with a hot tub, planned as luxury accommodation for a group travelling together.
Winter
Telemark gave its name to a way of skiing with a free heel and a low, bending turn, and the resort is planned to honour that quietly. The idea is a ski hotel in Norway that starts at the door: when there is enough snow, prepared tracks will lead straight from the entrance up through the birches. A pair of old wooden skis will hang in the hall as a reminder of where the sport grew up.
After a day outside, there will be a wood-fired sauna on the shore, a hole cut in the ice with a ladder down into very cold water, and lanterns along the path back to the rooms. Snow depends on the winter and we cannot promise it; season dates will be published before opening.

Dining
The main restaurant is planned as one long room of dark timber tables facing the water, open from breakfast to a late dinner. The cooking will follow the season and the region: fish from cold lakes, game from the forest, roots, berries and cultured dairy, prepared simply and served without ceremony.
At the centre of the kitchen there will be an open fire. Much of the cooking is planned over wood and embers, in full view of the room: bread baked in the ashes, fish on a plank, stock simmering all day. The second, smaller restaurant is designed around this hearth, with a handful of tables close to the heat.

The larder
Dried herbs hang from the beams; jars of preserved berries, pickled vegetables and cured fish line the shelves. The plan is for much of it to be picked, gathered or bought close to the lake in the short summer, then used slowly through the dark months. It is the least glamorous room in the building and probably the most important.

A small gaming lounge is part of the plan, and it comes with an honest condition. Land-based casinos are not currently licensed in Norway. Casino games and gaming machines are offered only by Norsk Tipping, which holds the exclusive right, and betting on horse racing is run by the Norsk Rikstoto foundation.
The gaming part of Fjellro will open only if the law allows it and a permit is granted. If it does, the intention is not to build a top casino resort in miniature, but a quiet hotel casino room that sits alongside the lake, the kitchen and the sauna rather than above them.

Gaming should stay a pastime. If it ever stops being fun, Hjelpelinjen offers free, confidential help. There will be no bonuses, no promotions and no promises of winnings at Fjellro. No opening hours are set.
Spa
The spa is planned at around 1 300 m², built from timber and grey stone and turned towards the forest and the lake. It is designed as a spa resort in Norway should be: simple, warm and close to cold water.
Swimming in the lake and the ice hole will follow safety rules and will only be possible with staff present.
Gatherings
A timber hall under exposed trusses, a boathouse over the lake and a small room for meetings with a view of the canal. The plan is for weddings, retreats and private dinners at a luxury resort in Norway that is kept deliberately small.

Inland Telemark is a landscape of long lakes, forested valleys and old timber buildings, with a flat-topped mountain watching over it. A Telemark hotel here is less about sights to tick off and more about days outdoors.

Not in the usual sense. Land-based casinos are not currently licensed in Norway. Norsk Tipping holds the exclusive right to offer casino games and gaming machines, and Norsk Rikstoto, a foundation, runs betting on horse racing. Fjellro is a planned project, and its gaming lounge is subject to licensing: it will open only if the law allows it and a permit is granted.

Where boat trips on the canal are available, guests will be able to use them like anyone else, depending on the season and the canal's schedule.

Fjellro is planned as a small lakeside hotel where the landscape, the locks and the sauna come first and the gaming lounge follows, subject to licensing.
