It started with one unsatisfying table
The club began as a standing Thursday game in a borrowed room. The cards were good, the company
was better, and the table was a folding board with a stapled cloth that sagged by midnight.
After one season of that, our founder — a cabinetmaker by trade — built a walnut oval for eight
players and set it in the room without comment.
The next winter, three of the regulars asked for one of their own. The winter after that, a
hotel card room asked for six. By 2012 the Thursday game had a waiting list and the workshop had
a second bench.
Today the atelier keeps a deliberately small order book. We would rather build twenty tables a
year that we can stand behind for a lifetime than two hundred we never see again.
